It is definitely way more emotional and invests a lot of time and effort to build an emotional attachment with the characters. It looks similar but feels different to Argo. There is no good guy (India) and bad guy (Pakistan), a very tempting road to take for Bollywood writers apparently! Am I saying that it is better than Argo? Not necessarily. This film is in the same breed as Argo, where Argo is very US-centric (funny, because half the credit should go to Canada) and Neerja is more universal. It claims instead to tell a story of human bravery, not just desi-bravery. Think Mother India, Queen, just to name two that I can remember).Īlso the way the promo was directed at not just Indian audiences looked promising. (And to be fair Bollywood, surprisingly even compared to Hollywood, has been very lenient on a male-less/female dominated plotlines. Neerja stood out from the rest of the crop when the first promo material was released.
